Pre-game
D.C. United and Atlanta United meet once again. While Orlando City may be the perceived rival for the Five Stripes, it could be argued that their match-ups with D.C. have better resembled what a rivalry entails. It seems like fireworks always pop off when these two meet and this match appears to offer the most promising prospects so far.
Wayne Rooney is here and he’s helped transform D.C. from a lowly performer to a strong contender for the last playoff spot in the East. Our old pal Yamil Asad is questionable after sustaining an injury last weekend. Other than that, Ben Olsen should have the rest of his first-choice lineup available to him.
Meanwhile, Atlanta will still be without Franco Escobar (leg injury) and Brandon Vazquez (foot injury) in addition to their long-term injuries.
The Supporters’ Shield race is heating up with the New York Red Bulls pulling in front at midweek. But, both the Red Bulls and NYCFC lost on Saturday, leaving the door wide open for Atlanta to pick up a huge advantage over both in the standings. Can they get the job done or will D.C. get closer to the red playoff line? Let’s find out.
Note: We’re trying something new with our match threads this year. We’ll be updating the post with updates of goals and big moments as they happen. Check back every so often during the match for highlights and commentary.
