Villalba edges past Gressel to win MLS Goal of the Week

Two deserving nominees

MLS: Atlanta United FC at San Jose Earthquakes Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Tito Villalba’s cracking first -time strike from the edge of the box against San Jose has edged out Julian Gressel’s volleyed effort against Real Salt Lake to win MLS Goal of the Week.

For the first time (that I can remember), Atlanta United had two goals nominated for MLS Goal of the Week.

Both Tito Villalba and Julian Gressel were among the five nominees. Ironically, three of the five goals up for the honor came in matches involving the Five Stripes, but we shall not talk about that Vako goal again.

In that match with San Jose, Tito scored an absolute worldie of a curling shot from outside of the box. The goal cut into the Quakes’ 2-0 lead at the time and eventually helped Atlanta pull off the dramatic comeback in the second half.

A few days later, Julian threw his hat into the ring with a stunning volley that ultimately ended up as the match-winner at home against Real Salt Lake. It was a lovely strike from the guy who is usually on the other end of the goal creation.

Both goals were fantastic and important, but there can only be one winner. Let us know in the poll below who you’re voting for and make sure to go the official MLS site here and cast an actual vote so one of them wins.
