Atlanta United announced on Thursday its decisions on players that had contract options heading into the 2020 season.
Mikey Ambrose and Jose Hernandez already unveiled on social media that they would not be returning next year. Ambrose, who is out of contract, will be available for selection in the re-entry process later this month, while Hernandez, who did not have his option for 2020 picked up, is eligible for Monday’s End-of-Year Waivers draft.
Meanwhile, Chris Goslin, Justin Meram, Patrick Okonkwo, and Florentin Pogba were others that had their options for 2020 declined. It is possible that Meram is a player that could be tapped for a new contract with the club if he so desires since he is eligible for free agency. Goslin, Okonkwo and Pogba will be part of the waivers list with Hernandez.
Also out of contract are Alec Kann, Kevin Kratz, Jeff Larentowicz, and Brek Shea, but offers have been extended to Kann and Larentowicz for their respective returns.
Four players had their options picked up: Mo Adams, Andrew Carleton, Julian Gressel and Leandro Gonzalez Pirez. Gressel’s option was naturally going to be picked up, but he is currently embroiled in a contract stalemate with the club. We’ll see how that develops and what ultimately comes of it.
Here’s how the offseason roster stands as of now:
Goalkeepers (2): Brad Guzan, Brendan Moore
Defenders (6): George Bello, George Campbell, Franco Escobar, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, Miles Robinson, Jon Gallagher (on loan to Aberdeen)
Midfielders (7): Mo Adams, Ezequiel Barco, Andrew Carleton, Luiz Fernando, Julian Gressel, Emerson Hyndman, Eric Remedi
Forwards (5): Lagos Kunga, Josef Martinez, Pity Martinez, Dion Pereira, Tito Villalba
