Atlanta United announced today that is has signed defender Florentin Pogba on a free transfer. The 28-year-old defender joins the Five Stripes after seeing his contract run out with Turkish club Gençlerbirliği.

Pogba is a veteran of Ligue 1, spending seven years with Saint-Etienne. He’s also appeared 21 times for the Guinea national team.

According to transfermarkt.com, he’s capable of playing both centerback positions and can also fill in at left back if needed.

“We’re pleased to officially welcome Florentin to our club,” said Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra. “He’s a physical center back who also has the ability to play with his feet. He also brings an immense amount of experience after representing his club and country in various international tournaments and we expect him to compete for playing time on our backline.”

While it all depends on how the rest of the offseason moves shake out, it seems like this could a depth signing for Atlanta as they try and navigate the difficult schedule this season. With the added stress of the Concacaf Champions League to deal with, you can expect a lot of squad rotation. Having someone like Pogba capable of filling in and giving other players some rest could prove valuable.
