With a week and a half to go before it opens its season against Herediano in the Concacaf Champions League, Atlanta United announced on Saturday that it has waived Chris McCann.

The 31-year-old signed for Atlanta in 2016 and was then loaned to Coventry City before Atlanta began play in 2017. Across two seasons, he appeared in 45 regular season matches, starting 30. He suffered a quad injury during Atlanta’s match against Toronto FC on the final day of the 2018 season, while only playing 8 minutes during the club’s MLS Cup playoff run.

While McCann had seen a good amount of time at left back/left wing in relief of oft-injured Greg Garza, the club aren’t short of options there with Mikey Ambrose, George Bello and Brek Shea angling to lay claim to the spot. At the end of the day, it appears that McCann is the odd man out.

We wish Chris and his family the best wherever he ends up.
