Atlanta United are down but not yet out against Monterrey in the Concacaf Champions League. The Liga MX side hold a commanding 3-0 lead going into tonight’s quarterfinal second leg at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

This situation shouldn’t be too unfamiliar for Atlanta fans. It’s the exact predicament that the Five Stripes had the New York Red Bulls in during last year’s Eastern conference final. This time the roles are reversed and Atlanta will be tasked with overcoming the considerable odds.

It has happened before. Soccer is a funny sport where weird things happen. Monterrey are an extremely talented team, but so are Atlanta United even if their results so far this season don’t show it. You only need to look as far back as last week. Manchester United went away from home to PSG in the UEFA Champions League, down two goals, and with an injury-riddled side came back to shock the French champions.

Atlanta United have the firepower to score the required goals. It’s just a matter of figuring out Frank de Boer’s system and getting on the same page. Can they finally do it tonight and make Monterrey sweat? For our sanity’s sake, let’s hope so.
