Atlanta United will soon see their Concacaf Champions League campaign ended after the Five Stripes fell 3-0 to Monterrey in the first leg of the teams’ quarterfinal matchup in Mexico.
Atlanta had a great chance to pull a favorable result and keep its hopes alive in the home leg, but Monterrey capitalized on a fatigued Atlanta team and scored two crucial goals in the final 10 minutes to put the tie realistically out of reach.
Man of the Match: Pity Martinez
No one played well, but Pity Martinez never really had a chance to get going as he was hacked down time and again by the Mexican opposition. Martinez drew 10 fouls in the match, a figure that hasn’t been equaled in MLS since 2013. Special shoutout to Miles Robinson, who’s the only Atlanta United player that’s yet to put in a below-par performance.
