With Julian Gressel and Gordon Wild having received green cards, the assumption was that Atlanta United rookie Anderson Asiedu would get an opportunity to play with the first team. He had performed well across 10 matches with ATL UTD 2, showing tenacity with the ball despite his small frame and contributing 2 assists from his spot in midfield.
That’s now off the table as Atlanta United announced on Friday that it had waived the 22-year-old Ghanaian, putting an end to his brief Five Stripes career.

Where does that leave the team now? Asiedu took up a slot on the 30-man roster, so the timing of the news coupled with Gressel and Wild’s green cards being finalized could mean that the front office is looking to bring in another player inside the secondary transfer window later this summer. It could also open up a path for a player like left back Jose Hernandez, an international player who is on loan with ATL UTD 2 after playing just 17 minutes with the first team last year, to be recalled.
We’ll see what happens in the end, but Atlanta will have time to consider its options after it takes on Chicago tomorrow. As for Asiedu, we wish him the best in his professional career.
