After a postponement for an unplayable field in Charleston and a win over the Battery on a questionable playing surface in Kennesaw, Atlanta United advance to the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 and will travel to Columbus, a place where they already played in even more comical conditions this season.
That’s right, if all this talk about field conditions wasn’t enough, we get to remember possibly the most embarrassing soccer match ever to be allowed to happen. In late March, during Atlanta United’s rough start to the season, they traveled to Ohio and lost 2-0 to the Crew on a waterlogged field during a monsoon. The conditions were so bad that Brad Guzan said it was a “disgrace” to be playing the match.
Perhaps Frank de Boer and his men will be out for a bit of revenge for that travesty of a match.
Atlanta will take on Columbus on Tuesday with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. at MAPFRE Stadium. That match will be streamed on ESPN+.
