After much handwringing and logistical challenges, Atlanta United and the Charleston Battery finally met for their fourth-round U.S. Ooen Cup match, with the Fives Stripes winning the battle of attrition as well as the match by a score of 3-1. It wasn’t a pretty performance from Atlanta, but the home (or away?) side’s large edge in raw quality was enough to see the team over the line and into the next round against the Columbus Crew.
Man of the Match: Brandon Vazquez
Good for Brandon. After what has been a frustrating season for the former U.S. youth international, Atlanta United’s reserve striker has seen the ball hit the back of the net recently in USL play and carried that form into the U.S. Open Cup with a pair of goals in extra time. Frank de Boer and the staff at Atlanta United has moved Vazquez back up top as a central No. 9 and it appears to be paying dividends. Honestly, I don’t know what Tata Martino ever saw in Vazquez as a winger. Let’s forget that happened.
