Atlanta United manager Frank de Boer told reporters Saturday night that the club intends to make a signing during MLS’s secondary transfer window which opens from July 7 to August 7.
This week, the team waived its first round pick from the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, Anderson Asiedu, freeing the roster spot he occupied. In addition, Germans Gordon WIld and Julian Gressel received green cards, opening two valuable international player designation slots.
When asked after Atlanta United’s 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire Saturday if the club intend to fill the spot with a new signing, de Boer simply said, “Yes, yes.” He indicated that it would be a player who would offer minutes for the team immediately.
De Boer declined to offer any more information on the nature of the potential deal in follow up questions. Atlanta has several players who’ve played almost every minute for Atlanta United this season including Josef Martinez, Darlington Nagbe, and Franco Escobar since regaining fitness.
De Boer’s revelation was striking in its bluntness, if not for the signal of intent it sends that this talented team is not yet assembled in its final form.
