Atlanta United trade Romario Williams to Columbus Crew

Thanks for everything, Super Romario.

One of Atlanta United’s longest tenured players has been traded. Romario Williams has been dealt to the Columbus Crew. In exchange, the Five Stripes received $100k in general allocation money.

Williams officially joined Atlanta’s roster back in 2017 but rumors had linked him with a move to the expansion side all the way back to 2016 when he went on loan to the USL’s Charleston Battery from the Montreal Impact. The Jamaican international enjoyed great success on loan there and had many calling for him to get minutes with Atlanta in MLS.

The chances he received were few and far between thanks to the talent ahead of him. He may not have gotten the minutes he had hoped to get, but he still left his mark on occasion. In total, he scored just three goals in his Atlanta career in all competitions.

With the summer transfer window quickly emerging, if Atlanta United are to add to its roster, someone had to be moved to make room. It appears as though Williams just happened to be the odd man out.

“Romario helped bring a championship to the city of Atlanta and will always be a part of the club’s first title-winning team,” Atlanta United Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said in a press release. “We are grateful to Romario for his contribution to the club and wish him the very best for the future.”

Good luck in Columbus, Romario. Thanks for everything.
