Atlanta United return to MLS action today with a trip to Seattle to take on fellow co-founder of soccer, the Sounders. It’s been a whirlwind week around the Five Stripes world with the controversy of Pity Martinez and Frank de Boer coming to light and going through the media cycle. With a win in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals jammed in there too, it’s been some kind of week. It all culminates with a pretty important match against Seattle.
Despite all the drama in the media, De Boer has stated that Pity is set to start today. How will he react on the field now that all the dirty laundry has been aired out in public? Will it affect his play in a negative way or could it be a boost he needs to find a consistent run of form?
The Sounders and Five Stripes are pretty similar this season with the team from Cascadia sitting on 32 points, just two more than Atlanta with both having played 19 matches. They sit in third place in their conference coming into the weekend just like Atlanta too. On paper, it’s as even of a match-up as you’ll see.
The craziness of this week is over. It’s time to get on the field and play. Thankfully.
