Atlanta United corrected course with a 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact Saturday, picking up the team’s first three points since MLS play resumed on June 26 after more than a three-week hiatus. Montreal Impact sat deep and forced Atlanta United to maneuver around their rigid and organized 5-4-1 formation. Missing three of its integral attacking pieces, Atlanta United wasn’t incisive as they’d have hoped. But in the end, they didn’t have to be, thanks to the man of the match.
Man of the Match: Justin Meram
He only went out and scored one of the best goals in club history with a 25-yard rocket that hit the postage stamp from a tight angle. But after Montreal equalized early in the second half, it was a completely different type of goal — a scrappy set piece that Meram finished from the doorstep of goal — that ultimately saw the Five Stripes through to all three points in the match.
