Atlanta United conclude their 127th double-game week of the season today as they host D.C. United. If the New York Red Bulls are Atlanta’s bogey team, D.C. isn’t far behind. The elder United have had the Five Stripes’ number in the majority of their match-ups through two and a half years.
These two met very early in the season in D.C. with the Fightin’ Rooneys taking the points with a 2-0 win.
Both teams could move into first in the East with a win depending on how Philadelphia does in their match. D.C. sit in second lead Atlanta by two points with one more match played. Despite their respectable positions in the table, neither of these teams are really in flying form. They both recently had blowout wins, but other than that, it’s been a forgettable summer for both.
Frank de Boer could receive a big boost to his squad with Ezequiel Barco returning to training. The attacker has been out for several weeks now but could play a part this weekend according to De Boer.
It should be a fascinating match as it always is when these two teams meet. Now with both battling near the top of the East, the intensity and stakes should be raised.
