Atlanta United continued its red-hot stretch in league play with a 2-1 win over NYCFC Sunday in a match that, to be honest, was not as close as the one-goal margin indicates. The Five Stripes relentlessly pressed an NYCFC team playing on shorter rest and took full advantage.
Man of the Match: Josef Martínez
Josef Martínez bagged another brace, setting two league records in the process and stamping his name back in the race for the golden boot. It was Martínez’s 10th consecutive league game with a goal, eclipsing his own nine-game streak he had last season to tie the record previously set by Diego Valeri. His opening goal also made him the highest scoring player in MLS history across any three consecutive seasons — quite the achievement considering he missed three month of his 2017 season with quadriceps and foot injuries.
