Atlanta United are once again back at it with some midweek action, this time of the cup final/glorified friendly variety. The Five Stripes have a chance to put another trophy in their cabinet tonight as Club America comes to town for the second-ever Campeones Cup.
Atlanta received their spot in this match by winning MLS Cup, while Las Águilas are here after winning the Campeón de Campeones cup against Tigres. This new one-off final pitting MLS and Liga MX’s best against each other is still very new. Only time will tell if it catches on and gains some respect and prestige. But for now, it’s an interesting occasion that gets Atlanta United a national spotlight once more and offers a chance for minutes for some players who may normally not get to play against this level of competition.
Frank de Boer has his side riding pretty high of late, especially after a big 2-1 win over NYCFC at the weekend. Perhaps this match will offer the chance to experiment with new pairings or some tactical tweaks he may be pondering.
Nevertheless, it’s a chance for Atlanta United to win a trophy against a very good Mexican team. It may not have the drama or intensity of a Concacaf Champions League night, but it’s still high quality soccer between two talented sides.
