SOCCER: DEC 08 MLS Cup - Portland Timbers at Atlanta United FC

It’s been nine months since Atlanta United defeated the Portland Timbers in MLS Cup 2018 to conquer the league for the first time. The two meet for the first time since that glorious tonight, this time in the Pacific Northwest.

It hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing for either cup finalist this season. We all know about Atlanta’s early season woes transitioning in a new manager and squad additions. Their form lately is as best as its been since the playoffs, however. The Timbers also struggled mightily to begin the season. The acquisition of Brian Fernandez from Liga MX side Necaxa has been a huge boost for Portland.

Entering the weekend, the Five Stripes sit second in the East, still chasing the Philadelphia Union. Meanwhile, the Timbers have just seen themselves climb over the red playoff line to take over seventh in the West. Both teams will be eager to grab all three points to help their playoff seeding efforts. That should make for a very entertaining match-up between two undeniably talented teams.

Let’s soccer.
