Three thoughts on Josef Martinez being the absolute best

The greatest striker in MLS history carried his team to a win over Cincinnati.

Atlanta United got back on the winning track with a 2-0 win away to FC Cincinnati to break a two-match losing streak. After a tame first half, Josef Martinez put da team on his back doe and carried the Five Stripes with the only two goals of the match. Here are a few thoughts on one ‘meh’ performance and one amazing player:

  • This was not a great showing by Atlanta United. I don’t think there’s any debate about that. The first half? I can’t even really analyze it because I was dozing in and out of sleep through most of it. The second half was a little better, but really it came down to one thing and that’s Josef Martinez being much better at soccer than anyone else on the field.
  • Officially this is his 15th straight MLS game with a goal. Despite that dubious goal against Columbus not being corrected, that feat is truly remarkable. Especially in MLS with all the travel, rough flights, midweek games, to score in 15 straight is almost unbelievable. But for Josef, it’s probably not even in the Top 3 of amazing things he’s done for this club. We are truly blessed to be able to watch him every week.
  • Other than Josef’s individual brilliance, there’s really not much to glean from this one. They beat a team they should’ve beaten easily and looked average doing it. There’s four matches left and with the way the schedule lines up having Philadelphia and NYCFC playing each other on the final day, it’s all up for grabs in the east.
