Atlanta United saw it’s seven-match winning streak snapped Saturday as the team ran out of gas in the second half against the Philadelphia Union, losing 3-1. The loss saw the team’s run of seven-straight wins — including Campeones Cup final and U.S. Open Cup final wins — snapped before the team entered the FIFA international break. Frank de Boer’s side now has a week off before ramping up preparation for the team’s next game against the Columbus Crew.
Man of the Match: Josef Martinez
Despite the loss, the night was highlighted by a sensational team goal that was finished with aplomb by Atlanta United’s star striker Josef Martinez. The Venezuelan received a pass at the top fo the box from Pity Martinez and then played a 1-2 with Darlington Nagbe to put him 1v1 with Union goalkeeper Andre Blake. But the finish was as cool as we’ve seen from Smokin’ Joe, ghosting past Blake and calmly tapping the ball into the back of the net. It’s just a shame the team didn’t have enough in the tank to see the lead home.
