Atlanta United fans are still waiting for an official announcement from either the Five Stripes themselves or Club Tijuana regarding Leandro Gonzalez Pirez’ long-rumored move to Xolos. We’ve not heard of a potential replacement like-for-like replacement for him just yet, as if recent rumors are to be believed, Cerro Porteño left back Santiago Arzamendia is himself headed to Atlanta and not midfielder Mathias Villasanti as originally reported.

But according from a new report from Mexican journalist Raoul Ortiz, former Argentinian youth national and current Necaxa centerback Fernando Meza will be acquired by Atlanta via transfer.

Meza, who joined Necaxa at the beginning of the 2019 season, has played 18 matches with them thus far. And he has a link to a piece of Atlanta United’s past and present: he came to Necaxa from Colo Colo in Chile, where he played with former Atlanta midfielder Carlos Carmona, while he was a former teammate of Tito Villalba at San Lorenzo in Argentina.

We’ll see what comes of this latest rumor, but if it’s on the money, Atlanta United have a key piece of its 2020 puzzle sorted.
