There is breaking news coming out of Atlanta United headquarters this afternoon, so you may want to take a seat before reading any further...
You ready?
Atlanta United 2 announced today that they will play their USL home opener on March 8 against the Charleston Battery. The game will be played at Fifth-Third Bank Stadium, the team’s home ground, in Kennesaw.
The Battery finished in ninth place in the Eastern Conference in 2019, marking its 12th-consecutive season in which it qualified for the USL playoffs. The Battery fell in the first round to Nashville SC 3-1. The 2020 home opener will be the sixth meeting all-time between Charleston and ATL UTD 2.
Atlanta United 2 finished last season 14th out of 18 teams in the Eastern Conference with 35 points from 34 games. The team finished out the year with its best run of form of the season though, going seven games unbeaten before falling to Nashville on the final match day.
It’s far too early to tell how this team might fare with so few players signed to the roster, but — and I will repeat this ad nauseam — Fifth-Third Bank Stadium is a great place to catch a match.
