Following Wednesday’s thrilling, edge-of-your-seat 0-0 draw with Orlando, Atlanta United rides an unbeaten streak of two games into this evening’s match with the New York Red Bulls. New Designated Player Marcelino Moreno is set to make his debut for the club, marking the first time a DP has taken the field for the Five Stripes in six matches. With Ezequiel Barco’s indefinite sideline stay continuing, Moreno could provide a creative boost the Atlanta squad has not seen of late.
The opposing Red Bulls are in a comparable situation to Atlanta, sitting just two points ahead and also led by an interim manager, with new hire Gerhard Struber still many weeks and technicalities away from joining the New York side. They’ve dropped their last two matches to both Florida teams, most recently a 2-1 comeback by Inter Miami. The timing may be right for Atlanta to grab their first regular season victory over the Red Bulls in a series that only seems to fall Atlanta’s way when an MLS Cup Final is at stake. The previous match was the 3-3 goalfest in July 2019, where a late Josef header nearly earned the win if not for an even later BWP goal.
Who will come out on top in this battle of interims? Will Moreno begin his Atlanta career off the bench or in the starting lineup? Can the Five Stripes avoid defeat and set their longest unbeaten run of the 2020 season?
