UPDATE Oct. 9 3:00 p.m.: Atlanta United manager Stephen Glass hinted that new Atlanta United designated player Marcelino Moreno could play this Saturday against the New York Red Bulls (6:00 p.m. ET; FSS). Glass told media Friday “we do have something in mind for Moreno” despite the fact that the Argentine will not have trained or even met his teammates until he joins up with them Saturday.

Atlanta United’s newest addition is just one step away from taking the field. Technical Director and Vice President announced on Thursday that Marcelino Moreno has been cleared to play for the club and is available for selection.

According to Bocanegra, the club had to appeal to the league to clear their new Designated Player to be able to play. Despite the news that Moreno is available for selection, the former Lanus playmaker has yet to meet or train with his new teammates thanks to the league’s 10-day protocols in place due to the coronavirus pandemic. Moreno will finally get a chance to get acquainted in-person with his new teammates when he’s presumably on the matchday squad for Saturday.

Moreno spoke to the media on Thursday for the first time and his humble reputation was confirmed. A man of few words did reveal that Argentine legend Juan Roman Riquelme is his soccer idol and that he wanted to come to Atlanta because of the “spectacular fanbase” and that the club can be “a jumping point to Europe”.

Atlanta fans will be hoping that Marcelino can do his talking on the field with his talent. He should get that chance on Saturday in some fashion.
