Atlanta United kicked off its season in earnest on Monday with a 1-1 win (see what I did there) against FC Motagua on the road in Honduras. Not only is a trip to play in San Pedro Sula always difficult, but Atlanta was missing so many players for various reasons that manager Frank de Boer couldn’t even fill out a lineup card with a full squad — leaving one bench spot unused. But the team got the result it wanted — a score draw — and it means Atlanta will advance to the next round of the CONCACAF Champions League with a clean sheet at Fifth-Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw on Tuesday.
Man of the Match: Brad Guzan
No surprise here. Guzan was huge, and he needed to be with a shuffled up back line in front of him that included Franco Escobar at left back, Anton Walkes at center back and Mo Adams at right back. Fernando Meza was arguably the only player on the back line playing in his most natural position.
