Atlanta United announced today that it has agreed to sign Matheus Rossetto from Club Athletico Paranaense. The Brazilian midfielder joins the Five Stripes ahead of the 2020 season and will add plenty of depth at several positions for Frank de Boer’s side.

“Matheus is a technically gifted midfielder who gets around the field well,” Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said in a press release. “He fits our club profile, having already played in 70-plus league matches at only 23-years-old, along with international experience in Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. We’re pleased to add him to the team and look forward to him strengthening our midfield immediately.”

Rossetto, 23, is a product of the Athletico-PR academy, playing with the first team since 2015. He has totaled five goals and five assists in all competitions for the club since his debut, playing a variety of positions, but predominately as a central midfielder.

The exact role Rossetto will play in De Boer’s setup is still to be deciphered. It’s no secret the club have been looking for a midfielder since the departure of Darlington Nagbe at the beginning of the offseason. With Tito Villalba leaving as well, a need for another winger has cropped up too. De Boer has publicly stated his desire to bring in help at both positions.

Perhaps not coincidentally, Rossetto can play both positions. Whether that means he’ll be seen as a utility type player or a starter in one of those positions remains to be seen. The fact is, his addition will bolster the squad in more than just one spot.

Welcome to Atlanta, Matheus!
