Has quarantine boredom set in yet? Do you find yourself longing for the good ole’ days of two weeks ago, when we could all gather around and watch an Atlanta United match together? It seems like ages ago when we watched the Five Stripes walk into the Azteca and... played a game my mind has chosen to block out for me.
In an ideal world, we’d all be discussing Atlanta United’s trip to Chicago today where the Fire are playing their Soldier Field Opener, but our timeline doesn’t want us to have nice things, so instead the club has chosen to show one of the most crazy-wild-insane-unbelievable matches in team history in full tonight online. It’s a little way of helping us through our soccer withdrawals together as we fight on through these sportsless months.
To get in the proper mindset, let’s travel back to September 19th, 2018’s Match Thread by Rob Usry:
Atlanta United finally conclude a long four-match road trip tonight with a meeting against the San Jose Earthquakes. Coming off a beneficial win against the Colorado Rapids, the Five Stripes are in great position to put some distance between themselves and their main rivals for the Supporters’ Shield and 2019 CCL Spot. Now they must take care of business against a team they should beat.
Tata Martino had his team more than ready for any possible upsets on Saturday as they handled Colorado with ease. They’ll need that same preparation and intensity tonight to avoid the letdown. The Quakes have just fired their manager after an embarrassing loss. So, who knows how they’ll come out in this one and react to that adversity.
The usual lineup questions for Atlanta remain with the short turnaround. Who will rest? Will we see anything new? Tata is usually firm on his lineup choices despite possible fixture congestion, but could he decide this is the match to give some fringe guys minutes? We shall see.
