Atlanta United stayed perfect in MLS with a 2-1 win over FC Cincinnati in the team’s home opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Saturday night. Atlanta didn’t create tons of chances — they were outshot by Cincy 14-8 — but the chances they did create were good ones while Cincinnati’s chances were mostly potshots.
Man of the Match: Ezequiel Barco
Playing its first game without Josef Martinez, the spotlight was firmly placed upon Atlanta’s star players to step up, and step up they did. Barco scored the opener that Frank de Boer admitted “was 90 percent Pity’s goal” after he blew past Kendall Waston. But Barco also set up Emerson Hyndman for what would prove to be the game-winniing goal with a beautiful no-look slipped pass into the box. Barco’s season didn’t get off to a perfect start, but he continues to find himself in positions to score, and he’s getting better and better at putting the ball in the back of the net
