The NWSL will become the first US sports league back in post-lockdown action with its Challenge Cup in Utah starting June 26th. MLS will return with a tournament to be named later on a date to be determined later in a city to be named never. This afternoon, the USL completed the trifecta with an announcement that the Championship season will restart as early as July 11.
That means Atlanta United 2 will returning to action in the near future along with their big brothers. The 2s managed just one game before the season was suspended (a 1-0 loss against the Charleston Battery). Which is one more than Birmingham Legion fans like myself got to enjoy, as the Legion were on a bye in Week 1.
There are as yet no details as to how the USL Championship season will be played, although several plans have been floated, including one in which the league will be split into 4 divisions rather than the normal Eastern and Western Conferences in an effort to reduce travel expenses.
But the good news is: soccer is back is full force.
More or less.
