Is this finally the Nagbe replacement?

Atlanta United could once again be looking towards Mexico to improve its roster. With Fernando Meza and Jurgen Damm already onboard, the club appear to have their sights on another Liga MX player to strengthen their midfield.

According to ESPN’s Taylor Twellman, Atlanta United and one other mystery MLS side are interested in signing Mexico international Jonathan Gonzalez from Monterrey.

Gonzalez, 21, is a well-known player among American soccer circles. It was a few years ago that the central midfielder spurned the USMNT for Mexico after emerging onto the scene in Liga MX.

After a quick start to his career with plenty of plaudits coming his way, Gonzalez has hit a rough patch. He’s been relegated to a reserve role for his club and has disappeared from the international stage as a consequence.

It’s no secret that the Five Stripes need help in the midfield. The departure of Darlington Nagbe has left an undeniable hole. Whether or not this is the move to rectify that is the question.

What are your thoughts on this rumor? Excited about the possibility? Have your say below.
