If Atlanta United’s win over Nashville SC last week was a breath of fresh air for a club desperately in need, this past weekend’s 3-1 loss to rivals Orlando City was a cold splash of water to the face. Not only was it the club’s first loss to a local rival, but it cemented the stark reality the club faces. Atlanta has now lost to every opponent it’s played this season not named FC Cincinnati or Nashville SC, and Saturday’s result against an Orlando team playing on short rest and having traveled the day of the game is a scary indication of just how vast the gulf is between Atlanta and the top teams in the league.
Man of the Match: Jurgen Damm
If there’s any saving grace for the Five Stripes, it’s that the team has been hampered majorly by injuries and new players lacking fitness. Saturday afternoon offered our first glimpse at some of these players, and summer signing Jurgen Damm made his mark in only 10 minutes of action with an assist to Brooks Lennon. The Mexican winger brought life to Atlanta’s attack late on, and his pace on the flank appears to be a needed remedy for an attack lacking in dynamism.
