Four thoughts on Atlanta United’s 2-1 loss to Inter Miami

Varying degrees of bad.

Atlanta United’s valiant unbeaten run is no more. The Five Stripes fell 2-1 to Inter Miami in their first match ever in South Florida. All the action happened in a bonkers first half that saw three goals, one disallowed goal and two penalty misses. In the end, that sealed the result for The Fightin’ Beckhams as the second half offered very little in the way of action. Here are some random thoughts on a match that in fact happened.

  • Obviously this team still isn’t good, but at least the first half was somewhat fun to watch. Chances created were still lacking but the wing play from Jon Gallagher and Jurgen Damm was promising. Ezequiel Barco playing an attacking midfielder role, occupying the central area of the field showed some glimpses of good things as well.
  • Let’s not talk about the penalties. Maybe let the guy who has a track record of banging in plenty of goals from the spot in MLS throughout his career take them? I don’t know. Just spitballing here.
  • MLS refereeing is truly abysmal. I’m not blaming the loss on the officiating. This is just a general statement. The lack of common sense provided by most of the refs in MLS is appalling and hurts the enjoyment of the overall product.
  • Reddit says we’re spoiled for complaining so much. So, I guess we’re just supposed to sit here and not say anything at all. I feel like it’s perfectly normal to point out the bad while still being patient, but what do I know?
