Santiago Sosa completes successful sports hernia surgery

Good news

MLS: Atlanta United FC at Toronto FC Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Santiago Sosa has undergone a successful sports hernia operation and “will use the offseason to recover and will be re-assessed in a few weeks to better determine the timeline for his recovery,” according to an Atlanta United press release.

Sosa picked up an injury in Atlanta’s last regular season match against NYCFC and made his return to the starting lineup against NYCFC for the playoffs.

The Argentine joined Atlanta United ahead of the 2021 season, mainly due to former Atlanta United head coach Gabriel Heinze, from Argentine club River Plate and has been a major player for the Five Stripes thus far. He made 26 starts in 26 appearances and contributed 2,260 in Major League Soccer play.

Sosa has primarily played as either a center back or a defensive midfielder in 2021 and will surely offer Atlanta United head coach Gonzalo Pineda flexibility in how the team rolls out for the upcoming 2022 season.
