The Atlanta United transfer rumors are hot and heavy today, but unfortunately it’s not all heartwarming news. The most recent rumor is that fan favorite defender Franco Escobar could be on his way back to his original club, Newell’s Old Boys.

The report itself is vague, but notes that Newell’s are in the market for a right back and that Escobar is the preferred choice by both the manager and club directors.
Escobar has been tweeted cryptically several times in recent days, and he’s a player who is likely in need of a new contract in Atlanta sooner rather than later if he is not moved in the transfer window.

Unfortunately, this feels like a situation where MLS economics dictate the state of play, and Escobar could be a casualty. It’s also a bummer, if Escobar does indeed leave, that he wouldn’t be able to work with Gabriel Heinze, who Escobar is said to have idolized in the past.
Cue the “HOLD” comments!
