Atlanta United will be well represent at this summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup. Three of the club’s starters have been summoned by Gregg Berhalter to the USA’s final roster for the tournament. Miles Robinson, George Bello and Brad Guzan all made the final cut and will depart for international duty next week.
No player could benefit more from a good showing in the Gold Cup than Miles Robinson. With the centerback position wide open, some outstanding performances could easily catapult Miles towards the top of the depth chart.
For Bello this will be a great chance for him to get more experience at the international level after making his debut in January. The left back position is a spot of need for the USMNT but it is a crowded one. However if he gets his opportunities and shines, there’s always a chance he earns more looks come the fall.
Guzan’s call-up is an interesting one. It’s clear that he’s fallen down on the depth chart behind Zack Steffen and Ethan Horvath. He’s also likely not a candidate to be a starter at this tournament with the in-form Matt Turner in camp. His inclusion seems to be strictly for his veteran leadership.
The three players will report to camp on July 5 after this weekend’s trip to Chicago Fire. With the tournament beginning on July 11 and the final taking place on August 1, the trio could miss up to five league matches.
Good luck at the Gold Cup, fellas!
