UPDATED: Edwin Mosquera Suffers a Muscle Injury as He and Two Other Atlanta United Players Receive International Call-Ups

UPDATE: Edwin Mosquera has a muscle injury and will not be able to participate in the 2024 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament for Colombia’s U-23 team.

The official statement from the Colombian Football Federation states: “The coaching staff of the Colombia Under 23 team is allowed to communicate that Atlanta United (USA) player Edwin Stiven Mosquera will not be able to continue in the call-up, due to a muscle injury that prevents him from being in full fitness.

Coach Héctor Cárdenas, his coaching staff and the group of players wish Edwin Stiven Mosquera a speedy recovery, hoping that in the next opportunity he can make part of the Colombia Under 23 team again.”

While Atlanta United fans are eagerly waiting for the many transfer rumors going around to come to fruition, the wait is over to see players from your favorite team in action. Thiago Almada (Argentina U-23s), Caleb Wiley (United States), and Edwin Mosquera (Columbia U-23s) have all been called up by their respective countries in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Thiago Almada has been called up to participate in the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament, which acts as a qualifier for the top 2 South American U-23 teams to make the Paris Games. The tournament runs from January 20 to February 11 and is hosted by Venezuela. Argentina have been placed in Preliminary Group B alongside Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, and Peru. They will play 3 matches (listed below), and if they finish in the top 2, they will qualify for the final group stage round, beginning February 5. Almada captains the squad, having played 8 game with them before and recorded 2 goals with an assist. He is called up alongside former Atlanta United goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo.

Edwin Mosquera has been called up to Colombia’s U23 in Preliminary Group A of the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament. The group includes Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Brazil. This will be his third appearance will the U-23s after his first, two-game call up in December. Mosquera finished his season in Atlanta in high form and will be looking to replicate that in Venezuela.

Finally, Caleb Wiley will be looking for his second USMNT cap as he was called up for the U.S. match vs. Slovenia on January 20. His first cap was in April 2023 against Mexico. He is preparing for the U.S’ first Olympic appearance since 2008 and his first U.S. appearance in a major tournament. He is joined alongside the newly former Atlanta United player Miles Robinson.
