With six days to go until their first training, Atlanta United 2’s roster is starting to take further shape. Late last month, the team added a quartet of players, most notably USL vets A.J. Cochran and Jack Metcalf.
Today, ATL UTD 2 announced that it has signed goalkeeper Nicolas Caraux, forwards Gaston Cardozo and Brian Gambarte and defender Shawn Nicklaw to USL contracts ahead of the opening of training camp on Monday.
“In Nico and Shawn, we have two players with significant experience and quality who reflect the club’s core values,” ATL UTD 2 coach Scott Donnelly said in a press release provided by the team this afternoon. “With Gaston and Brian, we were able to bring in very good young talents, but also continue to strengthen the bridge toward the first team as part of the club’s unified approach.”
Caraux is a Frenchman with professional experience in his home country and in Scotland, with his most recent stops being ACBB and Versailles. Nicklaw is a USL vet, coming over from the now-defunct FC Edmonton.
Cardozo and Gambarte were rumored to be joining ATL UTD 2 as early as last week, and today’s announcement confirms that speculation. The duo played for the Newell’s Old Boys academy in Argentina, which, of course, was one of Tata Martino’s former teams as a pro.
