Report: Leandro Gonzalez Pirez move to Club Tijuana “about to close”

Following up on his pre-Christmas report that stated that Club Tijuana were in talks with Atlanta United to acquire central defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, Argentine journalist César Luis Merlo is now saying that a deal is now “about to close”, according to a story filed to the newspaper A.M. According to Merlo, Gonzalez Pirez consulted Tata Martino by phone to pick his brain and learn of the state of affairs around Liga MX prior to a potential move.

Merlo also reports Xolos were looking to potentially acquire one or both of Gonzalez Pirez and Paraguayan national Saúl Saucedo from Huracán in Argentina’s Primera División, and even made a bid for Saucedo of MXN$3 million that was deemed too low. Another player that Xolos have their eye on is Cruz Azul’s Bryan Angulo, who played under manager Gustavo Quinteros in Ecuador.

Locally, the AJC’s Doug Roberson is hearing the same thing, as a source tells him that the deal is “90 percent done”.

It will be interesting to see the amount of money Xolos are willing to put up for Gonzalez Pirez, but considering how much it dangled Huracán’s way, it probably won’t be a earth-shattering number. (Xolos aren’t the only club that have put out feelers for LGP, either.) Regardless, as we’ve noted here in the past, Merlo is as connected in the Mexican and South American soccer world as anyone else, so we’ll see what becomes of this latest update.
