Josef Martinez has been linked to moves back to Europe after enjoying a breakout season in MLS with Atlanta United, but his recent quote is nothing to worry about.
Reports in England have suggested that Martinez wants one move and one move only, Tottenham Hotspur. The basis of these reports is a quote from Martinez that has been misinterpreted, sending a wave of panic throughout Atlanta’s fanbase.
The quote from the Venezuelan striker discusses a possible move back to Europe: “That desire is intact, I’m just 23 years old. Atlanta is closely linked to Tottenham and other European teams, they are buying young players with big goals for them.”
Martinez’s words can be misconstrued, but in reality he is praising Atlanta’s business of buying young players such as himself, Miguel Almiron, etc., and helping them develop as players.
While the possibility of Martinez leaving still exists, there’s no real need to worry about the story floating around about Tottenham. Martinez has been very outspoken about his happiness in Atlanta and we can all dismiss the rumors for what they are, fake news.
Breathe a sigh of relief for now because there’s plenty of time to worry in the off-season.
