Just as everyone was settling into bed Friday night, our friends in Argentina had to go and break Atlanta United Twitter wide open like in 1998 when The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and Mankind plummeted 16 ft. through an announcer’s table.
Yamil Asad, on loan from Argentine club, Velez-Sarsfield, will reportedly have his option to buy exercised by Atlanta United.
While the story has yet to be confirmed by the team, Yamil’s Dad, a legend at Yamil’s former club Velez-Sarsfield and respected manager in Argentina, is about as close to a primary source as you can get.
The reporters who interviewed Omar Asad on AM670 in Buenos Aires, claim the buyout is in the ballpark of 2 million U.S. dollars.
Yamil initially left his home club after struggling in the first team at Velez, where he acted mostly unfairly as a scapegoat (see Heath, Harrison) for Velez fans. He’s been nothing short of amazing for the Five Stripes though, leading the league in assists with nine in addition to helping power the Atlanta high press with his stellar work rate.
While Velez fans seem happy to let Yamil go, the consensus in Atlanta will be that Atlanta United’s future looks even brighter.
If the rumors are true – and please God let them be true – welcome home, Yamil.
