Josef Martinez wins MLS Goal of the Week

Of course he did.

Atlanta United fans have done it again. A week after flexing their voting muscle and winning MLS Goal of the Week for Miguel Almiron, they’ve gone and got it for Josef Martinez too.

Martinez, who was announced to have completed his permanent transfer to the Five Stripes earlier this week, won the award thanks to his fantastic finish from a microscopic angle against the Chicago Fire.

I’d love to continue on and wax poetic about how deserving Martinez was to get the award, and he was, but this award has nothing to do with deserve. It’s all about which fan base is willing to vote their player in.

So far, Atlanta United fans are two for two. It’s hard to see a nominee from the club losing in a fan vote anytime soon unless they come up against a truly extraordinary goal or one of the few fan bases who are equally as expansive and passionate. Even if that happens, Atlanta fans should accept the challenge and try to win it anyways. Flex on em, Atlanta.
