Atlanta United announces multi-year extension with Brooks Lennon through 2023

This is a rather interesting bit of news.

Fresh on the heels of its acquisition of Brooks Lennon from Real Salt Lake on Dec. 2, Atlanta United announced on Tuesday that it has signed him to a multi-year contract extension through 2023.

This is an interesting bit of news for multiple reasons, the least of which is in relation to the amount of money Lennon was making at RSL on his current agreement. His base salary for 2019 was $230,004, with his guaranteed compensation at just over $242,000. Terms of the contract extension haven’t been released, but the fact that it’s through 2023 means that the club is looking at him as more than a bench piece and feels that he could be a substantial part of the club moving forward.

Reason No. 2, of course, relates to Julian Gressel and his current impasse with the club. Gressel is making just under $133,000 and is headed into the final year of his contract.

We’ll see how exactly the dots are connected in due time, but this latest move by the front office certainly speaks volumes.
