Atlanta United fans, and the MLS community as a whole, are coming to terms with Josef Martinez’s season-ending leg injury. The star striker came off in Saturday’s MLS season opener at Nashville SC and on Sunday was diagnosed with an ACL tear.
While the Venezuelan has received an outpouting of support from not only fans, but fellow players and clubs across the league, we hadn’t yet heard from him since the incident. On Tuesday afternoon, though, Martinez took to Instagram with a special message for those that had reached out to him.

Thank you to all who took time to send so many positive and encouraging messages, I read them all and they give me strength in this difficult period. Thanks to my teammates, players around the league, other teams and most of all the fans. See you soon Gracias a todos por los mensajes positivos y de apoyo en este momento difícil. Nos veamos pronto
It’s a massive hole to fill for not just Atlanta United, but for Atlanta sports in general. When Atlanta opens its home schedule at Mercedes-Benz Stadium this Saturday against FC Cincinnati, it’s going to take a lot of getting used to when the familiar No. 7 isn’t in the lineup.
Get well soon, Josef. All of Atlanta is behind you during this time.
