When 2017 finally arrives and Atlanta United FC takes the field, one of the competitions in play will be the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The 2015 edition of that tournament came to a close Wednesday night, when Sporting Kansas City overcame the Philadelphia Union in penalty kicks. Sporting KC won in the eighth penalty round, 7-6, after the teams finished extra time at 1-1.
For SKC, it was a second U.S. Open Cup win in four years. On the other end of the spectrum, Union fell in the final for the second year in a row.
Across the pond in the UEFA Champions League, a couple of English teams actually won. Manchester United beat Wolfsburg thanks to a goal and an assist from Juan Mata.
United's cross-town rivals picked up a win over a German team, too. Sergio Aguero scored a 90th minute penalty to clinch victory for the Blues.
Yeah, Ronaldo will probably score a few more goals over the course of his career.
What's happening in The A?
The Braves won their second straight against the Nationals, shutting out Washington, 2-0. With four games left in the season, Atlanta is only 25 games out of first place in the National League East!
Peachtree Hoops has a new look and an idea of who might be Hawks fans' new favorite player. Third-year wing Justin Holliday could be a fun addition.
No surprise here: the Falcons' 3-0 start has folks over at The Falcoholic pretty excited.
