When 2017 finally arrives and Atlanta United FC takes the field, one of the competitions in play will be the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The 2015 edition of that tournament came to a close Wednesday night, when Sporting Kansas City overcame the Philadelphia Union in penalty kicks. Sporting KC won in the eighth penalty round, 7-6, after the teams finished extra time at 1-1.

For SKC, it was a second U.S. Open Cup win in four years. On the other end of the spectrum, Union fell in the final for the second year in a row.
